Course Overview
The Superior Fall Trail Race 50 Mile is a point-to-point ultramarathon traversing the Sawtooth Mountain Range via the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota. The route spans 51.55 miles from Finland to Lutsen, keeping runners near the expanses of Lake Superior throughout.
The course moves through dense boreal forests, crosses wilderness rivers, and navigates ridgeline climbs. It carries a reputation for technical, rugged footing that rewards deliberate movement over pure speed.
While the 7,149 feet of total ascent is relatively modest for a 50-mile event, the terrain features intense, localized shifts. The opening miles are generally runnable, but the trail is frequently broken up by short, steep pitches—including sections pushing past 18 percent grades. These rapid transitions demand constant adjustments in pacing and effort, and the course tends to favor athletes who prioritize adaptability and patience over those who go out hard early.
Historical weather data points to the need for thorough preparation. Conditions in mid-September typically range from the low 50s Fahrenheit in the early morning to the low 60s by afternoon. Late-day rain is common on the North Shore, with nearly 0.6 inches recorded during the latter stages of the race in previous years.
Managing core temperature, layering appropriately, and adapting to changing traction on wet trails are all key components of a successful race strategy here.

Course Briefing
Miles 0.0 to 11.2 - Start to Crosby-Manitou
The race begins at the SHT Trail Head in Finland under the cover of darkness. With a 5:15 AM start time and sunrise not until 6:38 AM, runners will spend the first 80 minutes navigating by headlamp. Early morning temperatures will likely sit in the low 50s, so managing effort during those dark opening miles will matter.
The opening miles are among the more runnable sections of the course, though small climbs and short drops keep the rhythm from settling in completely. The route follows segments of Cramer Road, County Highway 7, and the North Shore State Trail, offering steady, manageable progress before the terrain becomes more demanding.
Around mile 7.0, the course passes through the Sonju Lake Road aid station. Runners then approach George H. Crosby Manitou State Park, entering near mile 10.49. Just before that transition, a sharp climb at mile 10.18 breaks up the otherwise rolling terrain and signals that the character of the course is beginning to change.
Key Challenges
- Darkness at the Start: The 5:15 AM start means runners face over an hour of darkness. Rely on planned effort rather than reacting to the pack while visibility is limited.
- Rolling Rhythm: The early miles feature frequent minor inclines and declines. Maintain a steady output rather than pushing the early climbs.
- Pre-Dawn Temperatures: Historic data suggests 100 percent cloud cover and high humidity with temperatures around 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Layer appropriately to manage sweat before the sun rises.

Miles 11.2 to 20.8 - Crosby-Manitou to Sugarloaf
Beginning at the Crosby-Manitou Aid Station, the course sharpens noticeably. The rolling hills of the first 11 miles give way to steeper, more demanding terrain where climbs and descents come in quick succession.
Between miles 12.43 and 12.94, the trail drops sharply at an average grade of -19% before immediately rebounding into an 18% climb. Managing these transitions carefully is important for both pacing and safe footing.
The remainder of the section follows an undulating mix of steady and steep inclines along High Ridge Drive. By mid-morning, temperatures historically hover around 57°F with lower humidity, offering favorable conditions as runners approach the Sugarloaf boundary.
Key Challenges
- Sharp Transitions: This section contains both the steepest uphill and the steepest downhill of the entire course in rapid succession. Deliberate pacing is essential to manage these transitions.
- Technical Descents: The descent starting at mile 12.43 drops rapidly over technical ground. Focus on foot placement and controlled braking.

Miles 20.8 to 33.3 - Sugarloaf to Temperance
This 12.5-mile segment serves as the long bridge through the middle of the race, connecting the Sugarloaf and Cramer Road aid stations before continuing toward Temperance. The terrain relies heavily on unpaved connector roads and trails, carrying runners through remote forested areas that include Boney's Meadow.
The elevation profile through this section is characterized by steady climbs and long, gradual descents. Grades rarely exceed 10 percent, giving runners the opportunity to settle into a more consistent effort than the sharper terrain changes found in the previous segment.
Toward the end of this stretch, the course builds toward the most significant downhill of the race. A sustained descent begins at mile 32.64 and carries into the following section, so runners should be mindful of pacing as they make their way down toward the Temperance aid station.
Key Challenges
- Distance Between Aid: The stretches between aid stations here require carrying adequate hydration and nutrition, particularly as afternoon temperatures climb into the upper 50s.
- Boundary-Crossing Descent: A major, 0.82-mile descent begins at mile 32.64 and continues past the section boundary into the next segment. Anticipate this sustained drop and moderate your downhill pacing to navigate it smoothly.

Miles 33.3 to 44.2 - Temperance to Oberg
Starting at the Temperance Aid Station, the route pivots into one of the most geographically prominent sections of the course. This stretch includes the longest continuous uphill climb and the summit of Carlton Peak, moving runners through challenging, high-elevation terrain.
The climb to Carlton Peak begins in earnest around mile 36.01, gaining over 320 feet on grades exceeding 12 percent. This is closely followed by the longest sustained uphill of the race, starting at mile 38.06 and covering just over a mile of distance. These back-to-back climbs demand steady effort and patience.
Weather becomes a critical factor in this section. Historical data shows a sharp increase in precipitation in the late afternoon, with over half an inch of rain recorded around 6:00 PM in previous years. Runners should expect changing trail surfaces and cooling temperatures as they work through the miles leading into the Oberg boundary.
Key Challenges
- Peak Summits: The climbs over Carlton Peak require sustained output on challenging grades exceeding 10 percent. Manage your effort on the ascents to maintain momentum for the subsequent downhills.
- Longest Uphill: A gradual but continuous climb begins at mile 38.06 and stretches for over a mile. Focus on a steady cadence rather than surging.
- Late-Race Moisture: Historical weather indicates a high likelihood of afternoon rain. Prepare for changing trail conditions and reduced traction on technical sections.

Miles 44.2 to 51.55 - Oberg to Finish
The final stretch begins at the Oberg Aid Station and covers the last major climbs before the finish at Lutsen Mountains. This section is not a simple run-in to the finish. After Oberg, the course still demands steep climbing, careful descending, and patience through the ski-hill terrain.
Starting at mile 45.61, runners face the single largest continuous climb on the course, gaining over 450 feet on grades that exceed 12 percent. Shortly after, another sharp 318-foot climb follows at mile 48.26. Arriving at these climbs deep in the race makes disciplined pacing essential.
The course closes with a series of steep descents. After cresting the high point near the Summit Express Gondola, the route drops down Ski Hill Road and Bridge Run Lane. The final mile includes a 16 percent downhill grade, requiring sharp focus and controlled footing to reach the finish line safely.
Key Challenges
- Final Climbs: The ascent starting at mile 45.61 gains over 450 feet on 12 percent grades. Rely on steady climbing mechanics rather than attempting to rush the summit.
